Canada: Responsible Gambling Council Names New CEO
The Responsible Gambling Council (RGC) has appointed a new CEO following a thorough search. Sarah McCarthy succeeds Shelley White, who served in the position for eight years.
In a statement, RGC said: “Sarah is a collaborative executive leader with fifteen (15) years of experience in leading teams to build and deliver social impact through the development of innovative solutions to complex challenges.”
RGC Appoints McCarthy as CEO
White declared her retirement in June. She has been at the forefront of the industry, particularly since Ontario's regulated market launched in April 2022, where she played a key role at the annual Canadian Gaming Summit, most recently held in June in Toronto. White has held the CEO position since 2016.
McCarthy will begin her new position on January 6, 2025. Her latest role was Vice President of Strategic Initiatives at the Rick Hansen Foundation, where she handled strategic and operational planning, implemented programs, and executed business development strategies.
Authorized Operators Are Required to Have RG Check
During her tenure as VP, the Rick Hansen Foundation introduced the RHF Accessibility Certification, a program that assessed nearly 2,000 buildings and educated more than 2,600 professionals to foster inclusivity in various fields. RHF is a group focused on dismantling obstacles encountered by individuals with disabilities.
At RHF, McCarthy also spearheaded the growth of the RHF School Program, which has informed more than 270,000 children in Canada since 2016 about disability and accessibility.
"RGC also noted in the statement: “Her ability to lead her team in securing and executing on over $20 million in government funding for Accessibility Certification exemplifies her prowess in forging substantial government and corporate partnerships, further enhancing outreach and impact.”
Directive to Avert Problem Gambling
RGC is a charitable organization focused on aiding in the prevention of gambling issues throughout Canada. It offers its own accreditation program, known as RG Check, for operators who fulfill its requirements.
“Shelley has been a passionate advocate for responsible gambling and Canada’s gaming industry during her tenure as CEO of the Responsible Gambling Council,” said Paul Burns, President & CEO of the Canadian Gaming Association, in June. “It has been a pleasure working alongside her as we legalized single-event sports betting across the country and opened up Ontario’s regulated iGaming market. Her retirement is well-earned, and the industry thanks her for all her efforts.”
